SUMMARY:Harvest Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nFrom the 30st of May till the 1st of June GROND will host part of the Harvest Festival organized in collaboration with damdam – an interconnected web of collectives emerging from de Appel’s Curatorial Programme\, the Lumbung Practice Temporary Master Programme at Sandberg Instituut and Gudskul’s Collective Study Programme in Indonesia. \nBuilding on the 25 years of Lumbung kindred experiments leading to lumbung – documenta fifteen\, for the first time this year we will gather with collectives to practice sustainable economies\, to think about our collective infrastructures\, shared practices\, common resources and values. One of our values is caring about the process\, rather than focusing on the production of artworks or exhibitions as isolated outputs. We turn toward each other and the relations that bind us. \nOur curatorial approach is embedded in the politics of friendship\, interdependence\, trust\, collective joy as well as engagement withAmsterdam and our localities. Alongside mapping our resources and needs in our ecosystem\, we build a common ground and think about potential seeds to plant. Out of this process\, several self-organised working groups emerged around common urgencies: community\, land\, economy\, printing\, publishing\, pedagogy\, documenting and archiving. In the Harvest Festival 2025 we share our understanding of lumbung practice and ongoing processes through nongkrongs (gatherings)\, workshops\, screenings\, discussions\, dinners and parties. What kind of future can we envision if we reorient our work around sharing\, communal rhythms\, and solidarity? \nThe program at GROND: \nFriday 30 May\, 10.00 – 17.00 \nMubadele\nWorkshop and Talk \nThrough the idea of Mubadele we aim to create a system where knowledge\, skills\, and materials circulate beyond the constraints of money. By mapping our existing resources\, and by organising discussions on funding\, this gathering is part of a longer-term vision: to develop strategies for economic resilience that are rooted in solidarity\, not scarcity. With Elke Uitentuis\, Colin Roustan and Alina Lupu. \nExhibition Opening – Everywhere is War\nFriday 30 May\, 17.00 – 21.00 \nThrough the making of stop motion animations the collectives Er Sell Reality and SSMG (Sudanese Stop Motion Group) gave shape to the feelings of guilt that they are facing because of leaving their beloved land and relationships behind. Everywhere is War is a process-oriented presentation that shows how both collectives have been experimenting with the animation techniques and exploring the battlefields under their skin. \nDuring the opening there will be dinner from 5 to 7pm cooked by Mohamed Alnoor\, \nand from 9pm a radio performance by Marc Nukoop\, Ivo Bol and Wytze Minne de Swart. \nThe exhibition is also open on 31 May and 1 June from 12 to 9pm. \n  \nSaturday 31 May\, 18.00 – 21.00 \nDon’t Stop Talking About Exile: The Voice of Women TV Show + Congo Solidarity Dinner\nScreening/discussion + Dinner convened by We Sell Reality & Parole de Femmes \nParole de Femmes TV Show (The Voice of Women TV Show) is a collaborative short-film led by women from the Emmaüs community. The screening will be followed by a talk with the creators of the film\, followed by a solidarity dinner for Congo. Guest speakers Eric Bimule and Aime Kabena will inform us about the situation DRC. \n  \nThe exhibition is also open on  1 June from 12 to 9pm. \nThrough the making of stop motion animations the collectives We Sell Reality and SSMG (Sudanese Stop Motion Group) gave shape to the feelings of guilt that they are facing because of leaving their beloved land and relationships behind. She performs on violin\, piano and pipe organ and composes for various ensembles.\nHer composed music foregrounds the beauty and complexity of raw sound roughly hewn. Her scores are handmade\, using a very personal style of notation with graphic elements.\nFor Spelltown\, she brings her violin and solo improvising talents\, inspired by Amsterdam’s international free improvised music scene. In this she has developed a personal approach embracing her musical roots in Atlantic Canada and her background in experimental music. Lately she is experimenting with amplification. \n  \nMarielle Groven– photo by Aaron Lumley \nDonia Jourabchi is a sound artist whose work explores the relationship between body\, space\, and sound. She engages in sound art\, experimental music\, and listening practices\, with a focus on spatial sound and site-specific projects. Through her sound explorations\, she examines how listening shapes both spaces and communities. \nDonia Jourabchi\nMarc Nukoop is a sound & movement artist\, composer\, and improviser. SUMMARY:TEMPERATURA
DESCRIPTION:Free Improvisation\nw/ trio Mulder\, Willems & Zn (Nora Mulder\, Karen Willems\, Lukas Simonis)\, duo Veličković-Prins (Jasna Veličković\, Gert Jan Prins)\nGROND Bijdorpstraat 1\, 1096AP\, Amsterdam\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets: regular €10 (or more) / discount €7 – available at the door & Online \n  \nOn June 14 we are hosting the next TEMPERATURA.\nAn evening filled with (un)beaten sounds and (un)expected silences\, marked by special performances by the trio Mulder\, Willems & Zn\, and the duo Veličković-Prins. A free improvisation music event\, with some of the musicians meeting on stage for the very first time. \n____________\nAbout the Event\nMulder\, Willems & Zn – Not a plumbing firm\, but a sonic excavation team.\nA performance by Mulder\, Willems & Zn is a journey through textures and tensions — from near silence to sonic mayhem. You’ll hear scraping springs\, breathing rhythms\, piano like you’ve never heard it\, spontaneous rituals\, derailed grooves\, and feedback loops that feel almost organic. This is music in conversation: instruments listening\, interrupting\, transforming one another. There are no setlists\, only settings. No solos\, only shared disruptions. Sometimes it’s playful. Sometimes disturbing. Often both. And yes — they bring their own instruments\, but they might also use a fan\, a tin toy\, or a discarded piece of metal to unlock new sonic possibilities. \n  \nVeličković-Prins\nGert Jan Prins focuses on the sonic and musical qualities of electronic noise and percussion and investigates its relationship with the visual. While he started his career as a drummer\, his works include performances\, sound-installations\, compositions\, electronic circuits\nand collaborations with other musicians\, visual artists\, composers\, and dancers. \nJasna Veličković is a Belgrade-born composer and performer based in Amsterdam. Her artistic output has been developed through an interaction between a life-long fascination with the sound\, an enduring interest in an intricate encounter between music and technology\, and an inclination towards experimentation.

SUMMARY:TEMPERATURA
DESCRIPTION:Free Improvisation\nw/ SpOp & Bruinsma (Dirk Bruinsma & Marit Shalem)\, Christian Smith\, schoco mune\, and Fred Marty\nGROND Bijdorpstraat 1\, 1096AP\, Amsterdam\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets: regular €10 (or more) / discount €7 – available at the door & online \n  \nTEMPERATURA is a new concert series initiated by the composers/performers Jasna Veličković and Fani Konstantinidou. The series is focused on contemporary music from the Netherlands and beyond\, aiming at bringing together all its current expressions.\n \nOn Thursday 3 July\, TEMPERATURA presents the trio Dirk Bruinsma\, Marit Shalem\, & Christian Smith\, and the duo schoco mune & Fred Marty. \nABOUT THE EVENT\nTribolumina\nTribolumina is an ongoing audiovisual project by SpOp & Bruinsma in collaboration with percussionist Christian Smith . The metariality of played upon objects is a central topic for our audiovisual performance. While playing and projecting we are following the phenomenon of Triboluminiscence\, in which light may appear while hitting\, shaking\, rubbing or scratching solid material. \nThe composition evolves as a live improvisation: a combination of percussion and a set of recorded samples in correlation with projected video. The duo percussionists achieve a unique in between meditative and extatic sound\, with rhythms emerging out of found metal objects and fabricated instruments. Machinery pieces\, chains\, bells\, plates\, dishes and more. These are arranged as a sprawling landscape on surfaces as well as hanging mid-air. Added to that are drums\, flexible plastic tubes and electronics manipulated by controllers and pedals. \nThe live visuals are projected on a single or double screens in a way which is either limited to a screen or scattered over the space. While a second projection might appear on a transparent theater screen partly overlapping the main screen. The images contain filmed and manipulated loops of the very played upon objects with glimpses on the musicians themselves\, in combination with architectural designs\, frozen or gleaming landscapes\, light beams and textures in a bath of fluid to dusty substances. \nDirk Bruinsma works as a composer and musician in various settings\, ranging from chamber music to soundtracks for film and dance\, free improvisation and experimental rock music. He appears on well over a thirty CD productions\, mostly of his own groups and worked with various artists for exhibitions or stage productions. \nMarit Shalem\, also active as SpOp\, is a visual artist\, creating experimental video works and projects. Her recent work Milk\, a documentary installation has been exhibited at MU Hybrid Art House recently. Her projects often introduce multiple linearities while dealing with identity\, communication and commercialism. \nChristian Streit Smith is a percussionist living in The Hague. Before moving there in 2016\, he received master’s degrees from the Basel School of Music and McGill University\, as well as a bachelor’s degree in music from the Oberlin Conservatory. He is a core member of Oerknal (NL) and Gyre (CH)\, and has played for four years with the Rosa Ensemble and Opera Spanga. \n \n  \nschoco mune x Fred Marty\nThe collaboration between schoco mune and Fred Marty started in 2022\, at Multiversal summer retreat in Besançon\, France. They release the first new CD “tempête de sable – 砂嵐” (Eng. Sandstorm) the end of June 2025. Carefully exploring the boundary and connection between two different instruments —acoustic double bass and electronic instrument— delivering a prickly sensation of the frequency on your skin\, overwhelming soundscapes will make your senses numb\, and you will feel absolute silence finally\, like you are in a sandstorm \nFred Marty studied classical double bass at the La Roche-sur-Yon and Boulogne- Billancourt Conservatories\, and jazz in Bordeaux. Moving to Paris in 2007\, he delved into improvisation\, developing a unique style that blends everyday sounds with experimental playing techniques. Since 2009\, he has explored musique concrète\, often incorporating recorded voice and sound materials that evolve slowly.  A member of L’Onceim orchestra since 2012\, Marty currently works on his solo project\, composes for his quartet\, and performs with Elizabeth Czerczuk’s company. \nschoco mune is a sound performance project that delivers explosive\, noisy\, chaotic soundscapes with a strong focus on physicality and intuitive action. It started to liberate from all conventional musical approaches and traditional gender norms in 2020. Using sounds as a tool to embody human perception\, pain\, emotion\, feeling\, thoughts\, and imagination\, “schoco mune” explores its cognitive process\, share its experience and sense unheard sounds and voices through its performance.

SUMMARY:TEMPERATURA
DESCRIPTION:w/ DECONSTRUCTED MELODIES\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets: regular €10 (or more) / discount €7 – available at the door & online \n\nTEMPERATURA opens this concert season with DECONSTRUCTED MELODIES\, a quartet consisting of the musicians Peter van Bergen\, Jeroen Kimman\, Koen Nutters\, and Gert-Jan Prins.\n \nAn all-star band of four Dutch musical personalities who\, between them\, have done everything imaginable in the field of music. Organising and improvising inside of every layer of the music business\, curating concerts\, series and venues\, leading bands and ensembles\, playing with the greats\, travelling the world. Coming from different generations and directions of noisemaking\, here\, in this quartet setting\, they share their love of melodic improvisation in a floaty memory game of pieces played and pieces heard. Deftly moving around each other\, leaving space to create\, each on their own\, layers of tempo\, punctuation\, melody\, and lyricism. Playing their own compositions alongside classic pieces from Dutch colleagues (Mengelberg\, Altena) and American originators such as Sun Ra\, Carla Bley\, Anthony Braxton\, Ornette Coleman\, and more to blend in. Trying to find a tone\, an expression\, playing contemplative noise-jazz melodies in an airy space of contemplation\, together alone\, alone together\, creating balance between space\, time\, and culture\, with a logic of the post-modern and a sensitivity of the cultural here and now. \nPeter van Bergen – tenor sax\nJeroen Kimman – electric guitar\nKoen Nutters – electro-acoustic bass guitar\nGert-Jan Prins – percussion\, electronics \n_____________ \nTEMPERATURA is a concert series initiated by composers/performers and GROND members Jasna Veličković and Fani Konstantinidou. The series focuses on contemporary music from the Netherlands and beyond\, aiming to bring together its diverse expressions. By promoting the wide spectrum of contemporary musical stimuli\, TEMPERATURA seeks to bridge the gap between musicians\, composers\, and performers from different musical backgrounds. Through these temporary crossings\, we aim to create an environment—a playful space for experimentation and open ears—that fosters performing\, creating\, and experiencing music together. Ultimately\, TEMPERATURA strives to bring fresh musical adventures to local audiences and to spread today’s artistic practices.

She loves to play and create spaces that were unthinkable. \n \nDaphne Karstens combines sculpture and costume to create experimental wearable sculptures\, costumes\, performances and installations. Her work focuses on experimentation with materials\, shape and structure on and around the body. She often works with unconventional materials and combines the individual qualities of materials with shapes and structures. \n \nGoda Žukauskaitė is a Lithuanian performer and maker based in Amsterdam\, NL. As a dancer/performer\, she is working with companies Schweigman& (Boukje Schweigman) (NL)\, Kalpanarts (NL) and collaborating with independent artists around the Netherlands\, Lithuania\, Belgium and France. Goda is creating her own work mostly focused on durational\, endurance and site-specific performances which challenges the physical limits of the body. As an artist\, she often focuses on a single object\, seemingly simple at first glance\, unfolds into complex and layered narratives that intrigue and inspire.\npicture by Bowie Verschuuren \nJasper Stadhouders’ playing showcases a completely natural musicality. One has the sense that he is so connected with his instrument he can play whatever he imagines. His ability to perform difficult compositions\, with an assured sense of rhythm and harmony\, combined with his extremely physical and dynamic approach to improvising\, has led him being one of the most sought after guitarists around. \n\nNasim López-Palacios Navarro is an artist who works with music and computers. As a drummer\, improviser\, and composer\, and a beginner in programming\, he uses these tools to create art\, and as a source of inspiration. \n\nFor Ivo Bol all sounds are special: the hum of the fridge\, or the noise of the record just before the song starts. He performs his music using his body and mind to manipulate these sounds with light sensors\, touch\, gesture or brainwaves.

DESCRIPTION:w/Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn\, Siamak Anvari\, Leslee Smucker\, Anne La Berge\, Fani Konstantinidou\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets online: regular €10 / discount €7 – at the door: €12\,5 \n  \nOn Saturday 08 November\, TEMPERATURA presents two improvisation sets by the trio Alternating Lunes and the duo La Berge–Konstantinidou. \nAlternating Lunes are Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn\, Siamak Anvari\, and Leslee Smucker. All three artists involved in this project work with non-traditional approaches to instruments and sound. Leslee Smucker has developed a series of metal resonators for prepared violin; Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn designs and performs with hybrid acoustic instruments built from metal\, wood\, and strings; and Siamak Anvari composes electroacoustic works that frequently incorporate broken or recuperated instruments. Through this performance\, we bring these distinct practices into direct dialogue—creating a collaborative framework where our methods intersect\, collide\, and evolve together. The title Alternating Lunes is based on a poem by American poet and artist Bernadette Mayer\, whose work often challenges poetic conventions through formal experimentation and collaborative authorship. \ncan you hear sunrays?\nsee trumpet calls?\ntaste the shape of words?\n– excerpt from “Alternating Lunes”\nby Bernadette Mayer and Philip Good \n*Alternating Lunes is supported by Netherlands America Foundation.\n\n \n \n \n \n Leslee Smucker\n \n \n \n \n \n Siamak Anvari\n \n \n\nAnne La Berge & Fani Konstantinidou have shared the stage several times in the past\, though it’s been about three years since their last meeting. After all this time apart they have a lot to share: new sounds\, ideas\, experiments\, nuances\, and provocations.\nThe flutist\, improviser\, and composer Anne La Berge is well known to the audiences in Amsterdam and beyond. Her passion for the extremes in both composed and improvised music has led her to the fringes of storytelling and sound art as her sources of musical inspiration. Fani Konstantinidou\, composer and live-electronics performer\, is inspired by the sonic imprints of cultural and social identities and curious about the scapes of everyday life. Most of all\, she is fascinated by (subtle) changes. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Anne La Berge\n \n \n \n \n \n Fani Konstantinidou\n \n \n\n  \n_____________ \nTEMPERATURA is a concert series initiated by composers/performers and GROND members Jasna Veličković and Fani Konstantinidou. SUMMARY:Double Trouble: Duets at Grond
DESCRIPTION:A new series of duet performances by some of Amsterdam’s best musicians.  Curated by Grond member David Mitchell\, the new series will put together pairs of musicians for new and unexpected encounters\, showing different approaches to the same instrument or unusual combinations of instruments\, all with a common aim:  to take musicians out of their comfort zone.  For the first edition we put together two electric guitarists with very different approaches:  Theo Holsheimer has previously performed at Grond with Cilice Orchestra\, his project that puts together the power of metal with intricate arrangements for jazz and classical musicians; David Mitchell has a background in modern jazz and the classical traditions of Central Asia\, and works with long form loops to create complex layered improvisations.  Thursday 20 November at 8pm\, tickets 10Euros/7 Euros (concessions). \n

DESCRIPTION:w/ Joana Guerra\, Maria do Mar\, Romke Kleefstra\, Jan Kleefstra\, and Orphax\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets online: regular €10 / discount €7 – at the door: €12\,5 \n\nFriday 21 November\, TEMPERATURA presents the latest edition of the Kleefstra brothers’ poetry-and-music project\, IT DEEL IV. In this edition\, Romke and Jan Kleefstra collaborate with the cello player Joana Guerra\, and the violin player Maria do Mar. The same evening\, a solo live-electronics performance by Orphax\, aka Sietse van Erve.  \n \n• IT DEEL IV | Joana Guerra\, Maria do Mar\, Romke Kleefstra\, Jan Kleefstra •\nPoetry and music in an annually changing Frisian-international ensemble — that’s IT DEEL\, a residency project by the Kleefstra brothers. Last summer\, the Kleefstras invited cellist Joana Guerra and violinist Maria do Mar for a week-long creative residency at a special location: the Thomas Church in Katlijk. IT DEEL IV is out on vinyl LP on Moving Furniture Records. As part of their Dutch concert tour\, they will make a stop at GROND to present their album in the Amsterdam audience. \nThe central theme running through all IT DEEL collaborations: the relationship between humans and nature\, in all its beauty and complexity. It’s not a light topic\, but one that is universal and deeply connecting. Each year\, it’s remarkable to witness what has emerged from the Fryske grûn (Frisian soil) in the dialogue between the Kleefstras and their European guest musicians. Missed earlier editions? This is your last chance: IT DEEL IV is the final instalment of the project. Already a long-time follower? Excellent—we’ll see you there! \n• Orphax •\nAmsterdam based musician and trained drummer Sietse van Erve (Orphax) was introduced to electronic music in the early nineties. After playing around with tracker software for a couple of years\, he eventually recorded his first more serious attempts of music with beats and melodies in 1998\, though soon lost interest in both these.\nHe started researching new sounds and new ways of working – always with an organic touch\, often incorporating sounds that would be regarded by others as errors or mistakes. Considering life isn’t without errors either. During this search\, he found his way into drone and microtonal music. As a result in his most recent work\, time and spatiality become more important factors. The goal of the music is for the listener to lose the sense of time and place.\nLive\, this is combined with room for improvisation. This way of working results often in an organic form of drone and minimal music. \nOrphax – photo by Harold Zijp\n_____________ \nTEMPERATURA is a contemporary music concert series\, improvisation hub\, and everything in between\, initiated by composers/performers J. Veličković and F. Konstantinidou. The series focuses on contemporary music from the Netherlands and beyond\, aiming to bring together its diverse expressions. DESCRIPTION:w/ Leah Asher\, Maya Bennardo\, Christian Streit Smith\n20:30 (doors: 20:00)\nTickets online: regular €10 / discount €7 – at the door: €12\,5* \n  \nTuesday 25 November\, TEMPERATURA presents an acoustic popup event with selected compositions and improvisation sets by Leah Asher\,  Maya Bennardo\, and Christian Streit Smith. \nViolinist/violist\, composer\, and visual artist Leah Asher is an avid performer of contemporary music and creator of new artistic works. Leah is the executive director and violinist of  The Rhythm Method string quartet and co-creator of performance art duo Meaningless Work with Nicolee Kuester. Leah regularly performs with New York-based ensembles such as International Contemporary Ensemble\, Talea Ensemble\, and S.E.M. Ensemble. She formerly served as solo violist of NOSO Sinfoniettaen and co-principal viola of the Arctic Philharmonic. As a composer\, Leah has been commissioned by ensembles including andPlay\, Chartreuse\, Periapsis\, NorthArc Percussion Group\, The Great Learning Orchestra\, and Ensemble Hybrid. She serves on faculty at Lake George Composer’s Institute\, the Composers Conference\, and the Lucerne Festival Academy\, and has conducted many residencies at universities including NYU\, Columbia University\, Berklee College of Music\, Hunter College\, and BGSU. Recent releases include Leah’s solo album ‘Retreat into Afters’ on SCRIPTS records\, The Rhythm Method’s ‘Pastorale’ on New Focus Recordings\, and The Rhythm Method’s ‘Seaglass’ on Gold Bolus Recordings. Leah joined the faculty of Manhattan School of Music in 2022. \nMaya Bennardo is an active performer and composer living in Stockholm\, Sweden. Maya is interested in opening the dialogue and blurring the boundaries between composers and performers\, and is devoted to performing music of the present. She is a founding member of the violin/viola duo andPlay\, described by I Care If You Listen as “enthusiastic champions for new music and collaboration.” She performs new and traditional repertoire for violin and piano with pianist Karl Larson in their Bennardo-Larson Duo and is a former member of the internationally renowned Mivos Quartet. Maya’s compositions are characterized by slow\, unfolding timbral movements–exploring the co-existence of pitch and noise. Her compositions have grown naturally out of her improvisational practice on the violin\, and the two continue to inform each other. \nChristian Streit Smith (USA/NL) is a percussionist based in The Hague. He performs experimental music (composed and improvised)\, in many different constellations from solo to large ensemble to theater. In addition to his work as a musician\, he works part time as a landscaper. \n         \nProgram\n‘Discrete Species’ by Douglas Farrand and Christian Streit Smith\n‘silver birch vignettes’ by Maya Bennardo\n‘Upon the Wheel’ by Leah Asher\nSolo improvisation – Leah Asher\nTrio improvisation – Leah Asher\, Maya Bennardo\, and Christian Smith \n_____________\nTEMPERATURA is a contemporary music concert series\, improvisation hub\, and everything in between\, initiated by composers/performers J.
